At The Insect Shop, we specialise in designing and building custom bioactive enclosures that bring nature to life. Each setup is carefully crafted to replicate natural ecosystems, complete with live plants, beneficial microorganisms, and cleanup crews like isopods and springtails. These living systems create a healthy, self-sustaining environment that supports the natural behaviors and well-being of your insects, reptiles, or amphibians. Every enclosure is made to order, tailored to your specific species and space requirements. Whether you’re a hobbyist or a professional breeder, our bioactive enclosures offer a perfect balance of function, beauty, and sustainability, creating a thriving habitat that’s as natural as it gets.

Step 1- Choose Your Enclosure

Begin your custom build by selecting the foundation of your setup — acrylic or glass. Acrylic enclosures are lightweight, highly transparent, and ideal for modern, easy-to-handle displays. Glass setups, on the other hand, offer a timeless look, excellent durability, and superior resistance to scratches. Your choice sets the stage for the rest of your bioactive habitat, ensuring the perfect balance of style, strength, and functionality from the very start.

Step 2 - Choose your Habitat

Once you’ve selected your enclosure type, the next step is choosing your habitat theme — the foundation of your bioactive ecosystem. Each environment is carefully designed to replicate the natural conditions your species would experience in the wild.

  • Grassland: Open and airy with gentle slopes, dry soil, and light vegetation — perfect for species that thrive in warm, sunny environments.

  • Rainforest: Lush, humid, and vibrant, featuring dense greenery and rich substrate to support moisture-loving species.

  • Coastal: A mix of sandy textures, driftwood, and salt-tolerant plants, ideal for species adapted to breezy, seaside conditions.

  • Desert: Dry, rocky, and sunlit, with well-draining soil and minimal vegetation — suited for heat-tolerant, arid-dwelling animals.

  • Mangrove: A unique balance of water and land with moisture-rich soil, tangled roots, and high humidity for semi-aquatic or tropical species.

  • Eucalypt Floor: Inspired by Australian bushland, this setup includes leaf litter, bark, and earthy tones — perfect for ground-dwelling insects and invertebrates.

Each habitat is custom-built to maintain the right balance of humidity, temperature, and terrain, ensuring your enclosure looks natural and supports a healthy, thriving environment.

Step 3 - Choose your additions

Take your custom build to the next level with a range of optional additions that enhance both the look and function of your enclosure. Each feature is carefully chosen to improve the health, stability, and natural appearance of your bioactive setup.

  • Extra Plants: Add more live greenery to create a lush, vibrant environment that supports humidity and provides natural hiding spots.

  • Lighting: Choose from a variety of lighting options to simulate natural daylight, promote plant growth, and showcase your enclosure’s beauty.

  • Misting System: Maintain perfect humidity levels with automated misting — ideal for rainforest, mangrove, and other moisture-loving habitats.

  • Driftwood & Decor: Incorporate natural wood, rocks, and decorative elements to create structure, climbing areas, and visual appeal.

  • Isopods & Springtails: Introduce a cleanup crew to keep your bioactive system balanced by breaking down waste and maintaining healthy soil.

  • Leaf Litter: Add a finishing touch of realism while enriching the substrate and providing foraging material for invertebrates.

Each addition is optional and fully customizable, allowing you to create a thriving, low-maintenance ecosystem that’s as unique as your enclosure.
